Karen Rice is in private practice in Scottsdale; Alzheimer`s Mediation for Dementia Conflict serves Greater Phoenix to northern Arizona. Founder of Alzheimer`s & Family Care Management, Rice has provided research, education, dementia care management and mediation services since 1994.
Karen pioneered targeted dementia care services and first launched to underserved rural populations in northeast Ohio. Continuing needs assessments and facility development projects in the late 90`s identified need for conflict resolution services. The practice responded by becoming specialized in Family Caregiver Mediation and Adult Guardianship Mediation at the Center for Social Gerontology in Ann Arbor, MI in 2000.
Biography
Karen Rice has a Master`s Degree in Sociology of Health and Family; Master`s Certificates in Gerontology and Long-term Care Administration plus 1800 mediation and CEU hours. Her focus is quality, culturally competent person-centered care, staff/family conflict, professional education, certification and policy.
Karen is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator in Ohio. She led Alzheimer start-up facilities in Ohio, Michigan and consults on new programs and services. In 2003, she contracted with OhioKePro for The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service`s Quality of Care Mediation Initiative where she serves as mediator, facilitator and consultant. Current effort is benchmarking her training, ''A Culture For Service Excellence: Building Relationships'' and extending outreach to the CMS QIO's.
Karen has served on a variety of national advisory boards and critiques ''Key Elements of Dementia Care'' for the National Alzheimer's Association. Internationally, Karen has presented to Canada's Alzheimer's Society and is affiliated with the new Elder Mediation International Network. She contributes to both the caregiving and mediation literatures (www.mediate.com www.ezine.com ). For a decade, Karen served as Developer and Chair of the first two national special interest groups on Alzheimer`s Disease Research and Caregiver Stress. Karen`s research won State of Ohio recognition for findings on ethical dilemmas for staff of Alzheimer`s persons. She was co-Principle Investigator of a clinical study on cognitive decline and researcher on several US grant-funded aging studies involving Alzheimer`s.
Professional Development. Karen contributed to Interaction 2008: First World Summit and Symposium on Mediation with Issues of Aging held in Ottawa; and Elder Mediation for Family Mediation Canada. She regularly attends Arizona Elderlaw, the Alzheimer Consortium meetings. Karen presented ''The Importance of Social History in Dementia Care'' in Charlottetown and Sourie Hospital for Alzheimer Society PEI in 2006.
