Karen pioneered targeted dementia care services and first launched to underserved rural populations in northeast Ohio. Continuing needs assessments and facility development projects in the late 90`s identified need for conflict resolution services. The practice responded by becoming specialized in Family Caregiver Mediation and Adult Guardianship Mediation at the Center for Social Gerontology in Ann Arbor, MI.
Karen’s Biography:
Karen Rice offers 16 years experience in Alzheimer`s research, development, management and conflict resolution. Karen has a Master`s Degree in Sociology of Health and Family; a Master`s Certificate in Gerontology and long-term care administration and has completed over 1500 hours mediation and CEU hours. Her focus is quality, culturally competent person-centered care, staff/family conflict, certification and policy.
Karen is a Licensed Nursing Home Administrator in Ohio with temporary licensure in Arizona. As an Administrator, Karen led start-up facilities for Alzheimer`s in Ohio and Michigan and has consulted on numerous start-up units. As a Mediator, she contracted with OhioKePro for The Center`s for Medicare and Medicaid Service`s Quality of Care Mediation Initiative in 2003 and is opening a private practice in Scottsdale, AZ.
Karen is on the Advisory Board for SeniorLink of Boston. Internationally, Karen works closely with the Alzheimer`s Society of Prince Edward Island Canada on international professional education, certification, policy and caregiver resources.
Karen has contributed to both the caregiving and mediation literatures. She was on the focus group which critiqued "Key Elements of Dementia Care" for the National Alzheimer`s Association. She was Developer and Chair of the first two national special interest groups on Alzheimer`s Disease Research and Caregiver Stress. Work from these groups moved international at SYSTED`95 in Geneva, Switzerland along with variety of publications.
Karen`s research won State of Ohio recognition for findings on the ethical dilemmas for staff of Alzheimer`s persons. She was co-Principle Investigator of a clinical study on cognitive decline and researcher on several US grant-funded aging studies involving Alzheimer`s.
Professional Development:
Karen attended "Arizona Elderlaw 2006" in Phoenix; participated in "ElderCare Mediation" for Family Mediation Canada and presented the seminar, "The Importance of Social History in Dementia Care" to family and professional caregivers in Charlottetown and at Sourie Hospital, PEI Canada in February 2006.
